The Antiaircraft Refuge of Tetuán square was built in 1937 to protect the people of Castellón from the air attacks suffered during the Spanish Civil War. Like the other 42 public shelters and the nearly 300 private ones, they welcomed thousands of people who sought to save their lives during the conflict. After the conflict, many of them were boarded up or destroyed, although some of them have been preserved to this day.
In the 50s of the last century it was partially restored, but it was not until 2018 that the Museu Urbà de la Ciutat de Castelló became a museum space within the MUCC. The public enters through the Tetuán square and meets the stairs that go down to the galleries where several informative, audiovisual panels and even areas with mannequins have been prepared that show how the refuge was lived during the air attacks.
The visitor can feel the atmosphere that was lived in these facilities where the Castellón people were crowded waiting for the planes to move away from the center of the city and the bombs stopped hitting the streets of Castellón. The Antiaircraft Refuge of Tetuán square is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m..
